The traffic is crazy and until you get used to it it appears there are no road rules but they are just very different to "western' cultures. Plus you will need a guide to know where you are going so it would not be cost effective.
It would be better to book a day trip (or two depending on what you wish to do) and join whoever else is booked in that group. They are usually small and I have always enjoyed meeting other people on them. :)
For getting around locally I just walk or jump on the back of a scooter, there are locals everywhere who will offer transport for a small price, unless it is raining then I get in a cab but they are much slower due to traffic congestion.
