As long as your phone is unlocked, to check this just use someone else's sim card from a different carrier to yours. If it works then your phone is unlocked.
Once in Bali go to any of the many phone stalls and ask for the best sim card for sms and phoning Australia, if thats where you are from. They will set the phone up for you and give you the codes for even cheaper texts.
Remember to keep your own sim card for when you return, don't forget to take your little sim card remover thingy.
You will have a new number so text all your family and friends, your numbers will still be in the phone.
You can also use the internet although a little more expensive, use the free internet cafes that are around.
