I disagree with your friend, it's very very different to watching an orang utan in the zoo. Their behaviour is not that of a captive animal.
It's true there is no human - orang utan interaction and if there were then this would not be a rehab. But these orang utans really are free, they can leave the grounds of the rehab whenever they want to, and so it's fantastic there is no petting and patting them.
The orang utans can wander wherever they please which meant we saw them sitting on the pathway post rails and some were strolling along the path at the same time as we were.
I think it was great we had to keep to the paths. It meant minimal disturbance for the reason for having a rehab. and you knew that this place belongs to the orang utans and not to human beings
The education centre on the grounds is an excellent one
I think the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre is a great place to visit.
