We just got back yesterday and have been going to Bali yearly for the last 3 years - pregnant with mumber 1, then took number 1 and preg with number 2, then took number 1 & 2 and preg with number 3 (this time).
The 1st time I went with kids, I too wanted car seats. After seeing how it all works over there and the limited speed they go, I was satisfied that this would be the ONLY place i would allow them to travel without car seats. My kids know the rules as soon as they get back to Aust - they MUST wear belts and be in their seats. I have never had a probalem with this. You too may feel this way after your 1st trip. In response to your question - change just enough AUD when you get to Bali at the airport, and the rest at a money exchange place (easier and more relaible than someone dodgy off the street) - you will find them even in some supermarkets.
I took a big net for the baby cot which i threw over when the baby was asleep. I always dress the kids in light but long arms and leg pj's to sleep and put repellant on around their neck, ankles and dots on the sides of face - the night i did not do this, they got bitten. My daughter reacts quite badly to bites so fortunately i took some tea tree oil and 'SOOV' antiseptic/soothing cream. After that, i also bought some coils to burn outside the front door and some insect spray to spray the room before we headed out to dinner. The repellant i used was Aerogard odourless for 12mths and over, and stronger stuff for adults.
If you have any other kid related questions feel free to email me (left open) and i will see if i can help!
