terrible holiday. I have heard the Wina referred to as "the Bates Motel" before so I'm not surprised by your comments re your accommodation. I don't doubt this coloured your entire holiday experience.
You really might enjoy expanding your horizons a bit if you don't like the hustle & bustle of Kuta & Ubud. There are plenty of places to stay where you can get away from all that. I had been to Bali 5 times & only stayed in Kuta & Legian until our 2 trips last year when we stayed at Amed, Balian & Sanur. They are all better alternatives for us than the busier areas (I love Legian for shopping, restaurants etc & will always stay a few days in that area but I can never really relax there, I always feel like I've got to get out amongst it LOL)
