We both take our laptops for both photo collection, dvd watching and communication. No problems with customs, just take out of laptop bag and let it go through the x-ray etc.. Use a power surge protector for when in use due to electric fluctuations.
You can use internet cafes to connect, many free ones around if you buy a drink. Try Cybercafe, Legian, great place and great food and drinks. Also Gloria Jeans in Kuta square, go upstairs for airconditioning.
Or you can buy a dongle and add credit as you need. Also can use your phone if capable as a modem. Most hotels sell cards that allow you to use their internet hotspots too.
