Get a Vicks or similar nasal inhaler for the kids. If they have blocked eustachian tubes from the colds (highly likely) they can suffer intense pain as the plane ascends to cruising altitude and pressure drops. Same in reverse during landing. Eucalyptus oil or similar on a hanky over the nose also works well.
