driving in Indonesia is that most of the road rules are much the same as in Australia (other than those crazy triangular "roundabouts") but the style of driving is to be conscious and responsible for what happens in front of you but not so much behind you. Its difficult to explain but in comparison with the 'defensive driving' method that is encouraged in Aus where you are expected to be able to have a constant 360 degree awareness of the road, it is a more practicial and more shared responsibility mode of driving.
Be assertive but not aggressive and always and I mean ALWAYS, give way to the fuel trucks, if they toot you - get over ASAP.
And have fun, driving yourself is a great way to holiday in Bali. You have freedom and convenience and the thrill of spending most of your days half lost but in an enjoyable 'haven't been down this road before' type of a way. And for every one way street that you drive the wrong way down you are providing endless laughs and giggles for the locals.
