tips for driving.....don't!!
However, we have always found it to be handy to be independent, and have enjoyed use of hire vehicles.
Certainly, the mindset has to change a bit from what you are used to.
You need to be more aware of where you are going than where you have been.
Generally, as long as you make sideways movements slowly, and with some early signalling (don't expect everyone to do this), the traffic from behind will negotiate around you, on both sides with no problem.
If going straight ahead at intersections, you may use hazard lights (both flashers) as an indication.
In many ways its a game of bluff.
You must be very positive if pulling into traffic, and also very positive when dealing with others who will pull out in front of you.
If you take a totally defensive stance, you will spend a long time going nowhere.
Having said that, you need to be very much ready to stop at any time that you think "surely they won't pull out in front of me here"....they will!!
When fuelling up, ensure that the pump gives you what you are paying for. It is not unknown for you to be paying in part for the vehicle before you, as the meter is not zeroed.
Keep any Rp1,000 notes in the glove box for any occasional parking requirements.
There have been reports of thefts from westerners cars by letting tyres down, and then either robbing the vehicle while the occupants go for help, or also charging ludicrous amounts to fix whatever problem has been induced.
Isolated incidents perhaps, but best to be aware.
Good luck with it, I am sure all insurances, licences etc are covered.
