My son recently tore his ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb. It had to be kept immobile. Not quite the same injury, but they gave him a choice of a plaster cast, or a specially moulded hard plastic sleev, made to fit him, with velcro straps. Worked wonders and he couldn't move his thumb.
