I did this from syd to bali last trip with Jetstar and it waas easy.I was booked through to Bali so no need to collect luggage etc and they give you your boarding passes for both legs in Melbourne. You just walk a few mtrs to the Immigration section and then your straight into the duty free area where you can but you DF to take to Bali. There is a lounge area here where you can buy the usual airport type foods and drinks (beer, wines, mixes etc) Its not a big area and your flight to Darwin only takes 2hrs so you are there on no time. The trip back will be a bit tedious because of the time delay. I got a straight flight home to avoid that hassle but thought of hiring a car or taxi and going to the casino for a few hours!!! Anyway hope this helps and have a great trip....
