I have been to Bali many times and always suggested get a driver, but last March after seeing Nessie drive herself around, I decided if Nessie can do it so can I.
It was nerve racking at first.
First trip, we drove out of Legian to the early morning market around 7am, less traffic.
Initially I didnt understand that advancing into an intersection is mainly bluff (ie not with traffic lights). I found myself driving far slower (as do the other drivers) than at home, so far greater time to take evasive action.
Going inside roundabouts not around the outside was a tad scary.
If I could turn left at a traffic light intersection and didnt realise, I have always the locals to be understanding of my error.
The local toot their horns a lot, by its only as a warning. They are extremely non aggressive on the roads.
Make sure you obtain an International Drivers licence. Ensure your hire car is insured. Travel insurance will probably include hire car excess, in case you have an accident.
Carry lots of one thousand Rp notes, for parking.
I am definitely the converted now (thanks Nessie) and have found far greater opportunities to go and see what Bali has to share.
Doesnt matter if you get lost, you get to see something new.
Buy a Periplus map book.
If you book a car for a day you can extend if you too enjoy the experience.
Take care and enjoy.
