only enough to have conversations with villagers in the North. I have to be careful if I speak to a Southern Balinese as it is different and can be considered rude if I am using the wrong version, there is low medium and high. It is not easy (nor is Indonesian). It is a comical language when spoken it sounds made up. I would stick to Indonesian and just learn a few Balinese words with your closest Balinese friends. My husband is a lot better and can keep a conversation going for hours but then it's with his mates and it's usually a conversation I don't want to get into as boys will be boys and the Balinese love to talk about one subject a lot.
