I have been coming and going to /bali for a few yers now and have spent the past 5 years living in other parts of Indonesia. One of the best little secrets I discovered recently was a place called Warung Alang-alang in Amed (directly opposite hotel santai follow the little road up the steep hill right to the end). The place provides a true sanctuary with one of the best swimming pools I have ever seen - right on the edge of the cliff looking out over the sea.... private gardens and the most amazing stone baths... it was resort standard luxury but very small and private.
The local family that run the operation were so sweet and helpful. It was amazing to see something of this quality up in amed - one of my favourite places if you're into local culture, the sea, and getting away from it all. the resort was amazing and as they have only just opened prices were good value - about USD 30 to 50 per night (depending on room) including breakfast. but really the family there made it special for us and we found out that they are also the owners we felt good about supporting the locals who seem to have a very good idea of how to look after their guests.
if anyone is interested they can contact me or reply to this post for the contact details of the family otherwise just rock up and try your luck - it worked for us. happy holidays
