do the four dives in Bali. The first part of the diving course is theory and pool dives. The last part is 4 ocean dives, either from a boat or the shore. Boat is best. If you dont want to study while you are on holidays then you can do the first part before you go on holidays.

Gilli Trawangan is a good place to learn to dive as there are no strong currents and the water is clear. It is a nice place to stay too. I dived with the guys from Villa Omback (hotel) where I stayed. Most hotels there have a dive shop. The whole place is dive central.
You can arrange a dive course and accomodation from here.

There are many other places to dive like Nusa Lenbongan. I go there with Bali Hai cruises, stay in a hut and dive with them. They meet you on the cruise over and you discuss what you want to do with them. You can email them from Australia. The current can be very strong there and maybe not best for learning to dive. They also will take you to north bali for the wreck dive etc. Or you could stay in North Bali and dive with your hotel dive people. I have not dived in North Bali
