Just stayed in nusa Dua -secrity on the ground is not intrusive at all. Its pretty safe in Nusa Dua, quiet and not as many people as in other areas. Its full of Russians at the moment though.
As its own destination -it is more expensive for restaurants etc...but has water sports and cooking schools. ulluatu is near as is the garuda park? not sure of the name.
You can get day trips to rafting, biking there also. My kids went a few night into kuta is about 65000 in a bluebird taxi with meter.
