My daughter was in Bali in May 2009 and they had no issues using the Maestro card. We have always taken cash and the majority was $100's. It just made it a bit easier when calculating exchange rates. Lonely Planet advises that travellers cheques are being accepted less and less all the time in Bali.
We are heading over in May 2010 and will be taking cash with a back up of a Mastercard credit card. However we will be having it cancelled and a new one issued if it is used. After heading to Bangkok last year, our card was then used by someone in Paris and then again in Sydney..... It travelled more than we did!
