I prefer to think that the rule is not about weight - it is about volume. It cannot be pleasant to have such a person sitting next to you, overflowing like a human muffin into your paid for seat.
As the muffin for obvious reasons mostly find the seat uncomfortable, the muffin constantly moves and bumps into fellow passengers, making them, too, uncomfortable. The muffin keeps you awake for the full length of the flight. Imagine this happening on a flight from Australia to Europe or the US.
Business class seats are at times not wide enough. Thus the seat divider provide by Singapore Airlines in business class solves the problem with overflowing muffins. Bliss.
