we were supposed to take one each at 7kg's each, we were way over on that allowance aswell and no one battered an eye lid, and no one weighed our hand luggage either. However we were two families travelling together and the other family couldn't check in any extra luggage unless they wanted to pay extra, the check in dude did turn a blind eye to the large amount of hand luggage they had.
Pack wisely try not to put too much heavy stuff in your check in luggage, my hand luggage was full of sandstone lanterns, I could barely lift the small cases into the over heard luggage store :)
