You know what, if it was me and it was that critical to sit together, i would cough up the $2 ea for seat allocation. There is no need to pay for premium seats. Given how important it was I wouldn't rely on the word of a rep, I'd make sure.
Couldn't quite work out what your gripe was with the lost luggage incident. It happens with every airline and is a pain. I spent 2 hours waiting in line just to fill out a form for lost luggage with Garuda
maybe your lesson is that you need to consider travel insurance
