Some will say "budget, get what you pay for." etc etc Just because it's budget doesn't it's ok for an airline to treat people the way you were on the return journey.
I think you had no reason to disbelieve AA when they told you that you would be seated together. As a parent of a special needs person i can empathise, and am sorry the start of your journey home was so stressful.
Good warning for others. Pre-book seats if you want to be seated together, and don't believe AA if they tell you that you don't need to.
