ear pain from flying

Hi everyone,the last time i was on a plane my ears felt like they were goin to explode and i was only on a 2 hour flight.What do u do to avoid this kinda pain?I have chewing gum and lollies to suck on but they dont seem to work to well.Thanx in advance for any advice.
