We made a booking in person in July 2009 for July 2010 and were not asked to pay a deposit. We also held a booking for December 2009.

About two/three months ago I cancelled the December booking and amended the July booking slightly. This was done by email.

The return email acknowledged the cancellation and amendment and requested a one night deposit for the July booking. We have stayed there before July 2009 so the policy is for returning guests as well.

They do take the money straight away as for some reason my credit card would not work and they let me know by email that there was a problem with the card. I had a friend pay the deposit in cash when he was there last week to alleviate the problem.

I wasn't aware that the deposit was non-refundable as this was not mentioned in the email.

My brother took my December booking so I might ask him if he had to pay a deposit for that room.

We have a few friends who booked in July at the same time as us but they have not had contact with the hotel to amend anything and have not been contacted for a deposit.
