Unlike your usual holiday time of year, January is the 'wet season'. The prevailing winds are from the west, which means your old favourite surf spots are going to be onshore. For beginners, and anyone after a sandy beachbreak, I'd recommend Lembeng beach (Padang Galak). or further up the coast at Lebih beach, if the swell is a reasonable size.
Seranagan is an option if the swell is too small for the other 2 breaks.
