You can travel to Padang overland.

I once went by bus and train to Jakarta ataying overnight in Jogjakarta. Refusing to stay even one night in Jakarta, I accepted an offer from a sailor I met on a bus and and went by Haji ship to Padang.

I slept two nights in the one of the cargo holds with the other 3,000 passengers. Passengers who brought their own plates were given a pile of rice with a few chillies and dried fish.

Water was turned on twice a day for twenty minutes to flush the toilets.

We disembarked at Padang. As the passengers walked down the gangplank holding their luggage above their heads, the porters climbing the gangplank in the opposite direction went through the passengers' pockets.
