We always travel row 1.
You have a bit more leg space here, but the bulkhead in front of you is only about 1 mtr away from your face, and obviously is just a flat wall.
You miss out on the space under the seats where taller people need to put their feet/legs, and the height of the passenger is a factor here.
As far as the kids go, probably not much difference between 1 and 2, although being up the front there is more going on around you and may keep kids interested just looking.
Other factors are day/night travel.
If night time, and sleep is a possibility be aware that comforts such as pillows and blankets are not usually provided by AA, so you may need to cover for that too.
