I would be very wary of eating in small local places unless you speak Bahasa. That said, gado gado is usually safe.
Aroma's in Legian is great.
Japanese is often a safe bet if you stay away from things that could have dashi (like agedashi tofu). Sushi and vegetable tempura are usually fine. Indian works well too. I also think a lot of the decent Italian restaurants are OK.
I had no trouble whatsoever on a recent trip. (Special mention goes to the lovely Manik Organik in Sanur, but you're in Kuta, so that probably doesn't help).
