Some of the places we stay never ask for passports as we have stayed there so many times but I think it is more the small hotels and homestays. The tax man arrives when we leave and the hotel pays the tax. This has happened to us in Ulluwatu and Lembongan. When we stay in our Legian hotel we get asked for them.
