and think that unless you put temptation in the way of people you are pretty much ok with it.

How would hotel staff know if you had $10,000 cash or just $100, unless you show it around?

I dont think they would take the chance of opening everybody's room safe on the off chance one might have enough cash to warrant it.

There are always stories about travelers having their cash stolen from room safes or safety deposit boxes at reception but almost all of them are from "A person told me they had a friend who" or "a person staying at my hotel told me"!

I wouldn't use ATMs as my main source of funds overseas because my card has been kept by ATM,s in Australia before for no good reason,so it could happen overseas.

Most draw out quite a bit of cash at once from ATM,s because the bank charges each time you use it,that allows people on the street to have more of an idea that you have enough cash on you to warrant a snatching.

I think a lot of people who have large amounts of cash stolen from rooms are stupid enough to leave it laying around, lost it and are embarrassed so say it was stolen, spent way too much while drunk or just scamming the hotel, people staying with them or travel insurance.

There would be some genuine cases but most who take cash are aware they have it,split it up into smaller amounts and guard it with their life when carrying it from one place to another. The thieves would have to guess that you were the one with the cash and not cards.
