My advise is don't risk it. You can get a passport very quickly if you pay for an express, I think it can be done in under 5 days. Normal passport renewals only take about 14 days maximum. You will have to renew their passports anyway, why not save yourself the worry - nothing worse than stressing out at the airport!!!
