We were there in 2001 when they had elections on.
They do tell you to stay off the streets when there is a demonstration happening, but at the time we were unaware of this and were strolling around Kuta Square when it all just appeared on top of us. We just went into the nearest cafe and watched it from there.
At that time there were no problems, they ride around wearing the colours that they support with flags and tooting horns etc.
I know it was 8 years ago, but it wouldn't bother me again.
If you are worried, stay in your hotel on the day that they have their demonstration.
