I have sometimes been able to avoid the Airport Taxi Mafia by leaping into a taxi just as it drops off passengers at Arrivals at Bali Airport. Using a metered taxi costs about Rp 30,000 to Central Kuta.
My wife who is Indonesian tried to catch a metered taxi from the Bali Domestic Terminal. The taxi driver agreed to use the meter but the taxi was surrounded by other taxi drivers who threatened violence unless she succumbed to the Airport Taxi Mafia and used the voucher system. Rather than start WW3, she bought a voucher.
