The Balinese are used to dealing with rats.

On the last day of our holiday in Bali, my wife and I together with a Brit teacher on his first trip to Asia were sitting around an outdoor cocktail bar near the pool. My wife was sitting with her back to the cocktail bar and the Brit teacher and I were facing the bar. Behind the bar was a Balinese girl, who was obviously used to dealing with rats in the rice paddies.

Every now and then, the Balinise girl would spot a rat scurrying along the top of the wall. She would then deftly grab the rat by the tail and throw it into a bucket of water. Then she would grab an empty coke bottle and hold the rat underwater until it drowned.

My wife, oblivious to the splashing and gurgling behind her chatted gaily away. The young Brit teacher turned white every time another rat was caught and drowned. He and I said nothing in order not to alarm my wife.

Rats are part of the lives of Balinese and they are very adept at catching and killing them.
