Hope Jackie is recovering well. As said earlier, you really handled the situation well. It was something that could happen to any of us and the information may well be of use in the future.
The language or cultural barrier seems to be that the Balinese do not like saying no. This is either because they feel it is rude, or if they say no or respond negatively they will miss out on something.
No doubt someone better informed can enlarge on my theory.
