Myself and a couple of mates did the trip to sumbawa in 05. Hired a Toyota kijang for 10 Aus dollars a day back then and drove ourselves. Petrol was only around 4500rp a litre so was a cheap trip! Cost 450000 for the ferry to lombok...plus 100000 ‘fine' for not having the correct papers for Lombok. Ferry to Sumbawa was 255000 and avoided further ‘fine' thanks to some other tourists who had the police occupied!! Stayed at mona lisa cottages at lakey's, which was great. The peak right out front is heaps of fun. All the people we met were super nice, we mostly drove at night to avoid the traffic, fast trip behind the super charged busses! Stayed in lombok too so having the car was essential...it was an epic adventure but I'd probably fly back to sumbawa if I was to do it again...unless I planned on staying in lombok for a while on the way. No idea of current costs or drivers...
