i always take cash to bali. I put it straight into a safety deposit box when I arrive at the hotel with my passport etc. Then I just forget about it unti I need a top up again. I change money say every 2 days and don't keep a lot of rp on my person. Have paid by credit card at the hotel a few times and it always incurs the 3% surcharge. Also let them know that you want to pay by card the day before you checkout as had a problem at a smaller hotel that the boss wasn't there and noone else knew what to do. To me cash is king in bali and make sure your bank in oz gives you nice clean notes. Some moneychangers get a bit funny about dirty money ha! ha!
