in yogya if you can at all. Not only is there the temples but it is the hub of Java culture. On one day/night you can do the temples including a Ramayana at Prambanan then spend a day doing the Palace, the batik (much better than Bali) the market and then do a shadow puppet (lenghty version) at the Museum . if you are lucky then you will see the puppets being made.
to get there, book a flight from Bali to Yogya either online or when you getto Bali. get a driver for the day- (pay way less than in bali too ) who will take you wherever and wait for you. In Yogya use becaks in town. quicker and cheaper.
If you have more time, fly there and train /bus back and see more of east Java. very worthwhile.
