...the first thing I always do is check in, dump bags in room, have a sniff around the room a bit, check the balcony out, change if you need to then head to the pool and around the grounds for a look. Have a beer or whatever you drink, take it all in, then go and do the shopping for drinks and crap for the room.
Apart from that, I am sure the others can tell you what other important things to do tourist wise. I just love it when you first arrive and check in.
