Gili Nangu has a small hotel with basic bungalow accommodation, so-so restaurant, and nothing else - not like the other Gilis that have a variety of accommodation, places to eat, bars etc.

If you are looking for somewhere really quiet with nothing to do but laze about and snorkel then Gili Nanggu is great. Personally I love to go there for a day trip only. It has nice white sand, clear water and some coral, shade trees on the beach and no hawkers. There is no surf.

Down Kuta way, the Novotel is by far the nicest hotel in the area. There are cheaper options but not as luxurious. I usually stay at Mimpi Manis homestay which has air-cond or fan rooms, also a small house which is good for families.

The vegetarian restaurant (Ashtari) mentioned by Janoo is a must, even if you are not vegetarian. It is not open at night (they don't have electricity), and closed Sundays and Mondays, you can get lovely cake & coffee and the most amazing view. Easy to waste a few hours browsing mags on the cushions at Ashtari.

Also, there is a beautiful beach called Mawun, which is a lovely place to spend a day.

Shopping opportunities, which are limited anywhere in Lombok, are even more limited in Kuta. Do your shopping in Bali.
