It is just over an hour from Kuta area...allow 1 1/2 hours, so probably a little less from Sanur.
There were 32 children there in March ranging roughly from about 6-15years, plus a couple of younger children from Kadek's family.
It is a good idea to make a day of it, go in the morning and do some site seeing on the way back. You could go back through Ubud, or stop at Candi Dasa or Padang Bai in either direction.
Yes, as Deb said, best to hire a driver and have him for the day.
We shopped at Makro which is just out of Kuta, and found this best, but Hardy's is the other option 5-10 minutes from the orphanage.
Your driver will/should know how to get to both.
I'm sure they'll appreciate anything you're able to provide no matter how little. Food would probably be the priority, but other balls, toys, other things that you've mentioned would be appreciated too.
I hope you enjoy your visit.
If you have any other queries, I've left my email open.
