Yes, you could walk to the village but its about 3 or 4km, uphill from the market.
I expect the herons do come in each night, around sunset. We have been twice in March and there have only been a few herons, not the thousands as we had expected.
Yes, there are cafe's to watch the birds, we have only found zero star establishments.
