If you drive up to the top of the Jalan Raya Andong/Petutu/Gentong from the large statue (at the intersection of Jl Raya Ubud) to at least the rice terraces (some of the best on Bali)then drive back down slowly, the items in the shops are different from most other areas in Bali.
You will see naked wooden girafes/elephants/ducks etc, ready to be painted in the shops or out back.
Prices are many times cheaper than down south.
You can turn off and visit the Petulu village where the herons used to flock at sunset. Its a lovely drive.
There is a pond where the fishing club.
Wonder how your son and father will cope?
Other than 5 km strip above, there is the Ubud market, or wander along Monkey Forest Rd from the Monkey forest end. You could check them in for a massage and meet them later?
