I think the deluxe suites closest to the pool and to the left (closest to the airport) are the older type deluxe suites and the newer ones are to the right of the property.
Not sure about horror stories though - we have stayed at the Patra twice and never had a problem with it. I think there have been a few complaints on here about the cost of food but thats about it.
