We went to Bali last January and it cost us $3500 each for 12 nights including airfares from Brisbane through a travel agent. We have booked to go again in September 09 and I have booked it myself and it is only costing $1700 each for airfares and accommodation for 16 nights. I rang a travel agent that I have a deposit with and gave them the dates I was looking at flying and they came back with such an expensive quote that it wasn't even worth recouping my $200 from them (airfares only). I booked accommoation from information I got from this forum and it is costing us $950 each for 16 nights to stay in villas not hotels/resorts, two of the three villas with their own plunge pool (one we are splurging on for the last 4 nights). The cost also includes breakfasts and transfers.
