it can be cheaper. But if you can get a cheap fare or are not staying mainstream it is cheaper to do it yourself.
Also, going through an agent means you don't have to pay up until its nearly time to go and there is assurance that your booking is as it should be, NORMALLY!.
Also different agents will charge different comissions. I have found the big names charge BIG prices.
