We do exactly that. Cash is the best exchange rate, we always take $100's but I asked at a Kodak shop, and they'll take $50's too. We have the second key to the safety deposit box, and it needs both keys, and at our hotel you could attach your own padlock to the box too (which they recomended). I'd only carry enough for the day (plus a little) when we went out, the rest was in the 'box'. We had a new mastercard set up before we left home just to use in Bali only just in case. We'll have to see what the cc statement says at the end of themonth as we only used it to settle the hotel's bill.
