Clearly you were in no way after a 'beachfront' wedding, for a minimal fee you hire the entire front of the resort including pool for 2 hours whilst the ceremony is taking place. Being a "towel clad beer drinker" myself I wouldn't really mind a few fellow aussies rubber necking on our wedding. We too looked at the Villa option but could not sacrifice a beachfront wedding and that spectacular kuta sunset just for a bit more privacy. Also having 50 guests makes a Villa rather difficult.
Since the renovations of the gardens and pool area at BGH it has a beachfront setting unrivalled by any hotel within it's price range.
To us, holidaying in Bali means meeting wonderful people in a beautiful place. So we wouldn't if every tourist in Kuta was watching, as long as i could have a Bintang with them afterwards!
Good luck with your wedding. Hope it's all you ever wished for. :)
