A few years ago quinine could be got over the counter but in 2002 the Oz gov put it under doctor's script due to the high number of potentially lethal side effects. It is still used as the main treatment for cerebral malaria. As previous poster, grandma also recommended lemon for a cold - stick to bitter lemon.
