Very pleasant environment, rooms perhaps a little dated but very comfortable. Restaurant was a rather limited when we were last there in May but there are a number of good restaurants in all price ranges within a kilometer up the hill. Tjamphan is a 20 minute walk out of the village centre. Lots to see in & around Ubud and it's closer than Kuta to some of the big tourist attractions.
I recall there is a limit to taking rupiah out but can't remember how much. I usually end up with a hundred dollars worth or so, useful for the next trip, but if your friend wants big bucks, check with a consulate.
