A representative of the Denpasar police office said Monday the institution had launched a formal investigation into the death of New Zealander Sean Keith William at Hotel Sari Yasa Samudra in Kuta, Bali, on Sunday.
Denpasar police spokesman Ketut Suwetra said officers were in process of investigating the tourist's death.
"The police have questioned several witnesses in addition to collating evidence from the scene," Suwetra said, referring to the hotel room William was staying in.
According to several witnesses, he added, William was involved in a pub brawl prior to his death.
He was reported to have been highly agitated when his request for a drink discount was refused and ran amok, throwing around empty beer bottles.
Antara also reported that following William's erratic behavior, several security personnel and pub employees physically attacked him.
The police then took William away to Hotel Sari Yasa Samudra, however, his girlfriend later discovered his lifeless body on Sunday morning.
William's remains were taken to Sanglah Denpasar hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Suwetra said five suspects have been rounded up recently for further questioning.
